An Introduction of FTTH Drop Cable by OPF China

 

  The drop cable is mainly used for fiber-to-the-home(usually called FTTH). It is mostly single-core or double-core structure, and can also be made into a four-core structure. With the domestic optical fiber access market showing a good momentum of development, optical fiber access has become a hot spot in the field of optical communications.

What Are the Types of FTTH Drop Cable?

 

FTTH fiber drop are located on the subscriber end to connect the terminal of a distribution cable to a subscriber’s premises. The three most commonly used fiber drop cables include flat drop cable, aerial drop cable and round drop cable.

1. Flat Type Drop Cable:

Flat drop cable, with a flat out-looking, usually consists of a polyethylene jacket, several fibers and two dielectric strength members to give high crush resistance. Fiber drop cable usually contains one or two fibers, however, drop cables with fiber counts up to 12 or more are also available now. 

 

2. Aerial Drop Cable:

Aerial drop cable is self-supporting cable, with the cable fixed to a steel wire, designed for easy and economical aerial installation for outdoor applications. This type of fiber drop cable is fixed to a steel wire, Typical fiber counts of figure-8 drop cable are 2 to 48. Tensile load is typically 6000 Newtons.


3. Round Drop Cable:

Round drop cable usually contains a single bend-insensitive fiber buffered and surrounded by dielectric strength members and an outer jacket, which can provide durability and reliability in the drop segment of the network.

The dish-shaped drop cable for access network (for indoor wiring) is to place the optical communication unit (optical fiber) in the center, and place two parallel non-metallic reinforcing members (FRP) or metal reinforcing members on both sides. Finally, extrude black or color poly. It is sheathed with vinyl chloride (PVC) or low smoke halogen free material (LSZH, low smoke, halogen free, flame retardant).

The Difference Between Indoor and Outdoor FTTH Fiber Cables

Drop cables can be divided into indoor and outdoor fiber cable according to different use environments. Indoor FTTH optical cables are classified according to their usage environment, while outdoor FTTH optical cables are the opposite.

Indoor FTTH optical cable is a kind of cable formed by optical fiber (optical transmission carrier) through a certain process. It is mainly composed of optical fibers (glass filament as thin as hair) and plastic protective sleeve and plastic outer skin. There are no gold, silver, copper and aluminum in the optical cable, and there is generally no recycling value.


Outdoor: GJYXFCH

The optical fiber unit is positioned in the centre. Two parallel Fiber Reinforced Plastics (FRP)are placed at the two sides. A steel wire as the additional strength member is also applied. And the cable is completed with a black or color LSZH sheath.

Constructions Precautions of FTTH Drop cable:

In the optical fiber access project, the indoor wiring close to the user is the most complicated link. The bending performance and tensile performance of conventional indoor optical cables can no longer meet the needs of FTTH (fiber-to-the-home) indoor drop cable.

There are several requirements that need to be paid attention to during the construction of the drop cable:

1. The laying of the drop cable should be straight, without twisting and crossing, and should not be squeezed by external forces and damaged by operation. Power cords, household drop cables and cables for other weak current systems in the building should be laid out separately. If it cannot be satisfied, corresponding isolation protection measures must be taken. For steel wire reinforced leather cable, attention should be paid to grounding the metal parts in the junction box.


2. The laying of the drop cable should fully consider and strictly meet the requirements of "fire prevention, rodent prevention and extrusion prevention".


3.For important users or users with special requirements, protection should be considered, and different protection methods should be selected according to different situations.

4. The two ends of the leather cable should have a unified mark, and the mark should indicate the position where the two ends are connected. Label writing should be clear, correct and correct. Labels should be made of materials that should not be damaged.


5. The bend of the leather cable should be even and smooth. The curvature radius of the ordinary G.652 fiber should be greater than 30mm, and the curvature radius of the anti-bending G.657 fiber should be greater than (A type) 10mm, (B type) 7.5mm , (C type) 5mm.


6. Normally, the traction force should not exceed 80 percent of the maximum allowable tension of the drop cable. The instantaneous maximum pulling force shall not exceed the maximum allowable tension of the leather cable 100N. The main traction force should be added to the cable strength member. After the cable is laid, the tension should be released to maintain a natural bending state.

7. The drop cable reel should be used to carry the cable, and the cable tray should be used when laying the cable, so that the cable reel can automatically rotate to prevent the cable from being entangled.

 

8. During the laying process of the leather cable, the tensile strength and bending radius of the optical fiber should be strictly paid attention to, so as to avoid the optical fiber from being entangled, twisted, damaged and trampled.
